Stemming from Bhavan’s College, Department of Microbiology that has an illustrious track record in the area of Applied Microbiology, BRC takes pride in having a conducive environment and the relevant skill sets to handle scientific research. Typically, through its interactions with industry and other knowledge partners, BRC tries to identify and plan internal and collaborative research projects.
Intent is to identify methodology & knowledge gap in industry and coin research projects in accordance.
BRC’s consultative approach to research projects
- Through its regular interactions with industry and Regulatory bodies and information available in public domain, BRC identifies the gaps/lack of knowledge as well as methods and plans its external and internal projects in accordance.
Areas of Research with BRC
- Water & food safety monitoring
- Pathogen detection/surveillance in water, food, personal & home care products
- Studying microflora associated with home and personal hygiene and associated products.
- Spoilage of food, personal care products
- Effectiveness of disinfectants & antimicrobial agents
- Microbial risk assessment
- Water sanitation & hygiene (WASH) based studies and WASH interventions
- Anti-microbial resistance (AMR) studies
- Contamination resolution in hygiene & cosmetic products
- Applications of bacteriophages in bacterial control
- Effectiveness evaluation of water treatment technologies
- Grey water & waste water studies for pathogen detection
Internally Funded Projects:
Water
- Analyzing health risk from available water in urban slum of Mumbai city and an effort to mitigate the situation by applying Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA).
Hygiene
- Assessment of Mumbai suburban hospital/Nursing home environments for prevalence of MDR strains and their antibiotic sensitivity profile
Food
- Monitoring of protozoa in coriander leaves using a cost-effective method
- Recovery of cryptic food spoilage yeast and mold from preserved foods
- Assessment of microbiological quality of commercially available chicken sausages and the effect of low temperature and plant extracts on the survival of S. aureus & S. enterica
- Risk assessment of spoilage causing and pathogenic microorganisms in milk products using mathematical approaches
Environment
- Occurrence of F-specific bacteriophages in untreated and treated waste waters in Mumbai
- Isolation of ozone resistant bacteria from swimming pools treated with chemical disinfectants
Pharma
- Phenotypic and molecular characterization of Acinetobacter baumanii complex from clinical isolates
To be associated with BRC for any kind of projects
